A new streaming service from Lucasfilm, Ltd. is coming in 2019, and it’s going to be devoted exclusively to Star Wars content. The service, called “Star Wars: All Access,” will offer both original programming and a library of Star Wars movies and TV shows.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy made the announcement at the company’s annual “Star Wars Celebration” event in Chicago on April 12. She said that the service will “provide an entirely new experience that allows fans to explore the characters, worlds, and stories of Star Wars in ways they never could before.”
Kennedy also confirmed that the service will feature a new live-action Star Wars series from The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels creator Dave Filoni. The series, which doesn’t have a title yet, will follow a “family of original characters” and will be set in the time period between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.
Additional programming for the service will include a new season of the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, a new season of the live-action series Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian, and a documentary about the creation of the original Star Wars movie.
The service will be available on all major streaming platforms, and it will be exclusive to Lucasfilm’s own direct-to-consumer app. Pricing has not yet been announced.
With the launch of this new streaming service, Lucasfilm is clearly hoping to tap into the same fervent fan base that has made Disney’s Marvel and Star Wars movies some of the highest-grossing films of all time. The company is also no doubt hoping to replicate the success of Disney’s own streaming service, Disney+ (which is scheduled to launch in November 2019).
Disney+ will offer a host of exclusive Disney content, including all of the Star Wars movies and TV shows that are currently available on Netflix. It’s not yet clear how Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: All Access service will compete with Disney+, but it’s likely that the two services will offer different content libraries.
So far, there’s no word on whether any of the Star Wars movies or TV shows that are currently available on Netflix will be pulled from that service when Star Wars: All Access launches. It’s possible that Disney will want to make all of its Star Wars content available exclusively on its own streaming service, but it’s also possible that some Star Wars titles will remain available on Netflix.
